Abstract

Ireland’s Jewish community has long been in a state of demographic decline. The recognition accorded to the ‘Jewish Congregations’ in Éire’s 1937 constitution was removed in 1972, and the most recent census, taken in 2011, did not consider the miniscule number of Jews sufficient to merit a separate category. Relying on voluntary self-identification, official statistics list 1984 Jews in the Republic of Ireland and 335 in Northern Ireland. In contrast to the diminishing numbers, over the past decade and a half, ‘Jewish Ireland' has emerged as a flourishing academic topic
