Abstract

1. In CD/1 and BALB/c mice, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) caused hypothermia, whereas C57BL/6 mice responded to LPS by elevation in body temperature (T(b)). 2. In CD/1 and BALB/c mice, LPS caused an increase in leukotriene (LT) production by hypothalamus, while no significant elevation in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was observed. The opposite changes in hypothalamic eicosanoids were observed in LPS-treated C57BL/6 mice. 3. The results suggest that the balance between hypothalamic pyrogenic (PGE2) or cryogenic (LTs) eicosanoids may determine the strain-specific T(b) responses to LPS in mice.
