Abstract
The axial thermal expansion of carbon fibres used in composite materials is important in determining the overall thermal expansion of the composite. It has been observed that high modulus fibres have negative thermal expansions and that, the stiffer the fibre, the lower (i.e. more negative) is the thermal expansion coefficient. It is shown that this behaviour is predictable based on the thermoelastic properties of the carbon crystallites.
