Abstract
The use of a magnetic field or perspex absorbers for the reduction of the background of a Si(Li) detector due to beta emitting sources was studied. Both devices decrease the background to about the same extent but their effects on the X-rays measured are different. Criteria for choosing the better means are given. For low activity samples, the criterion based on the energy of the X-rays is that if μx>μβ lnδ/lnαδ, the use of a magnet is preferable, otherwise an absorber is a better choice.
