Abstract
The history of the chemistry of DNA has to a large extent been neglected in favor of the physical and genetic aspects. Yet the chemical studies on the nucleic acids spanned a period of more than 80 yr, and were crucial to the current understanding of the structure and function of DNA. The authors examined the published scientific record and interviewed several participants who made major contributions to the elucidation of the chemical structure of DNA. A partial analysis covering the period 1900 to 1955 is presented.
