Abstract

The capacity of a plate to sustain shear load greater than the critical load is studied. The concept of effective width for square plates loaded in shear is developed to consider rectangular plates loaded in shear. The deformation of the plate at failure is formulated. Very good agreement is observed between the theoretical results and experimental measurements carried out on aluminium web plates.
