The structure of the Ramat Yotam Caldera, southern Israel: a deeply eroded late Precambrian ash-flow caldera

Abstract

The Ramat Yotam Caldera is a Late Precambrian ash-flow caldera emplaced into the northern part of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. The eastern part is displaced about 6 km northward, and the restoration of the two parts results in an elliptical-shaped caldera with a diameter of about 2 × 3 km. The outstanding feature of the Ramat Yotam Caldera is the excellent exposure of the ring fault zone about 1 km long, which permits detailed study of its structure, eruption vents, and fissures. The structural model of the exposed southwestern part of the caldera is a collapsed caldera with a central downsagged area. The latter is bounded by two major faults and forms a horst. The downsagged area is characterized by a relative abundance of dikes, faults, and intensive hydrothermal alteration. These are interpreted to be the result of its location above the uppermost part of the magma chamber. -from Authors
