Abstract
Heating MnBr(CO)5 with Ph2Te2 in boiling benzene yields diamagnetic Mn2(CO)8(μ-TePh)2 (I), while the photochemical reaction of Mn2(CO)10 with Ph2Te2 in boiling tetrahydrofuran yields paramagnetic Mn2(CO)6(μ-TePh)3 (II) containing one unpaired electron (μeff = 2.5 μB at 296-78 K). According to X-ray structural analysis, I and II contain two and three PhTe bridges respectively. The Mn-Te bonds in II [2.622(1)-2.654(1) Å] are slightly shortened compared to those in I [2.655(6)-2.684(7) Å]. No Mn-Mn bonding occurs in I [Mn⋯Mn distances are 3.921(6) and 4.019(6) Å in the two independent molecules; MnTeMn angles are 95.2(2) and 97.2(2)° respectively], while one-electron metal-metal bonding is observed in II [Mn-Mn 3.058(1) Å MnTeMn angle 70.5(1)-71.2(1)°].
