Thermal lasing

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate, 10.6 jm excitation of Si02:Yb203 microsphere that induces lasing at 979nm. This suggests an effective temperature of surface-phonons above 3000C while bulk temperature remains below 1600C, which enables new directions in thermal processes.
