Abstract

For diffusion saturation of the surfaces of steel products with titanium, it is possible to use ferrotitanium, the composition of which is chosen as a function of the hydrogen partial pressure in the gaseous phase and the required composition of the alloy. The use of oxides instead of pure metals in the synthesis of Fe-Ti alloys is ineffective, owing to the difficulty of ensuring the required composition of the gaseous phase. In view of the great tendency of titanium to carbide formation, the range of existence of a solid solution is limited. Chlorination of titanium carbide in the presence of oxides is possible at very low CO//2 and H//2O partial pressures in the gaseous phase, but in practice such pressures are very difficult to achieve.
