Abstract

Thermoosmotic flow in the presence and absence of an osmotic pressure difference was measured in cellulose acetate and other synthetic membranes. The thermoosmotic pressures in cellulose acetate membranes were found to be a function of temperature, and very high compared to those previously observed in other membranes. Values between 0.94 × 106 and 3.5 × 106 dyn cm-2 deg-1 were observed. An analysis of the flow equations shows that the heat of transport across a membrane is a sum of two terms: the homogeneous heat of transport in the membrane phase and the enthalpy of dissolution of water in the membrane.
