Abstract

In this study theoretical models for each one of the three types of plugs were developed. The models providing the physical mechanics of conveying of those plugs in vertical, inclined and horizontal pipes. In addition, the models contain the contribution of key parameters such as: the slope of the plug front and the friction of particles picked-up from the stationary layer to the moving plug, acceleration of the particles and the friction resistance of the stationary layer. As a consequence, the general theoretical model was developed in order to present energy loss due to plug flow. This model combines characteristics of three different types of plugs as they move inside vertical or horizontal pipes. The newly developed model contains several basic assumptions, which are founded to be reasonable to use to describe powder mechanics within plug flow of coarse and non-cohesive materials.
