Abstract

The shear flow induced deformation of the planar long pitch flow-aligning cholesteric was modelled numerically. Three pitch-to-thickness ratios, with the midplane director perpendicular to the plane of shear, were considered. Unwinding of the cholesteric helix due to the flow alignment was found. A threshold character of this process was revealed. At high stress, the director in the prevailing pan of the layer was oriented at the flow-aligning angle. The transverse component of the flow was always present.
