Abstract

Spectral and gain characteristics of CO laser emission obtained from flash-photolyzed CS2-NO2 mixtures are measured and analyzed with a view toward understanding the results of preliminary experiments regarding lasing in CS2-O2 mixtures. Results of the measurements are analyzed in the light of the experimental data available on the kinetics of processes taking place in CS2-NO2 systems. The opposite roles played by NO2 in these systems are identified and discussed. In addition, NO2 is shown to relax vibrationally excited CO at high vibrational levels.
