Abstract

In vitro transcription and subsequent translation of the cloned Chlamydomonas chloroplast atpB gene was used to study assembly ofATP synthase. Translation in the presence of thylakoids resulted in association of the β subunit with the membrane. The in vitro synthesized polypeptide bound to the membrane copurified with CF1 on sucrose gradients. This provides more evidence for the self-assembly of CF1.
