Unusual bleeding in portal hypertension: From varices in an appendiceal scar

Abstract

A sixty-year old patient who suffered from portal hypertension, arising from hepatic cirrhosis, presented with severe bleeding from varices in an appendectomy scar (acquired 40 years previously). No description of a similar case was found in the English literature. This patient falls within the criteria of Cruveilhier-Baumgarten syndrome and therefore was treated medically as recommended in the literature.
