Abstract

Large samples of characters have been collected from six hebrew daily newspapers representing various styles and spelling approaches. The frequency distribution of single characters, diagrams and trigrams have been analyzed and compared using measures of information and chi square tests. The frequency distribution of the characters of ″Haaretz″ was found to be the best representative of the printed newspaper language for cases in which sequence of characters has to be considered. Thus, the frequency distribution of ″Haaretz″ might be used as a valid characterization of average input data, whenever elements of information processing hardware using Hebrew language input (e. g. keyboards) are to be designed economically.
