Abstract

Very low pressure pyrolysis (VLPP) of 1,3-cyclohexadiene yields only benzene and hydrogen uni-molecularly between 670 and 800°. RRKM calculations indicate that the data are compatible with the Arrhenius expression log (k/sec-1) = 13.4 - (59 ± 1)/θ. These parameters are very close to those to be expected from a mechanism wherein 1,3-cyclohexadiene is converted to 1,4-cyclohexadiene via a biradical intermediate. Concerted, orbital symmetry forbidden pathways cannot, however, be rejected as possibilities.
