Abstract
The effect of oxide phase modification of (Na beta-alumina vs alpha alumina) on the wettability by pure metals (Cu, In and Ga) are examined experimentally and are analyzed by a simple thermodynamic model. The high contact angles of liquid Cu, In and Ga measured for cleaved Na beta-alumina are still consistently smaller than for alpha-alumina. The improved wetting of sodium beta-alumina is attributed to a role played by the sodium-oxide exposed planes. Alloying Ga with Mo enhances the wettability of both oxides which is probably related to accumulation of Mo-O species at the melt-oxide interface.
