Abstract

Optical wireless communications (OWC) use light beams propagating through the atmosphere to carry information. As such, aerosols, turbulence, and pointing error are three dominant factors determining OWC system performance that should be taken into consideration when designing optical wireless links. There are two main categories of OWC systems: stationary systems and mobile systems. This entry presents the features, advantages, and challenges of both systems.
